The second we heard that Lamborghini was planning to release their first high-performance SUV, we were thrilled! After all, the prospect of a vehicle slated to pack an impressive amount of horsepowers, one that will surely feature an intricately designed exterior and come with a stylish and classy interior, was definitely to our liking. And to make matters even more interesting, right from the start, the Italian carmaker made it abundantly clear that this will be a performance-oriented machine, not simply a luxury soccer mom-mobile. And that’s what got us excited.
And just like their coupes and convertibles, Lamborghini named their first SUV after a bull. Well, kinda. For the Urus, the name comes from the aurochs, also known as urus or ure – an extinct species of large wild cattle that inhabited Europe, Asia, and North Africa a long time ago. Basically, an ancestor of domestic cattle. While not a fighting bull, it still represented a similar naming convention employed by the Italian carmaker for almost all of their modern vehicles. And with the Urus, naming their first-ever SUV after a mighty bison like beast feels more than appropriate in this case.
Overall, the Urus is a purebred Lamborghini. It features aggressive and angular exterior design cues, making the vehicle look outright menacing. Furthermore, thanks to large air vents, carbon fiber design details, and a slick, widened stance, the Urus takes the focal point of any parking lot. However, performance-wise, the Urus is nothing short of spectacular as well. The vehicle is powered by an Audi-sourced 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 engine. It delivers a maximum output of 650 horsepower and utilizes an 8-Speed automatic transmission, which, together with the permanent 4-wheel drive system with active torque vectoring, allow it to sprint from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in just 2.9 seconds. Furthermore, this powertrain also allows the Urus to behave similarly in various conditions and surrounding, from the city streets to the racetrack, a curvy, snow-covered mountain road, all the way to gravel country roads and deserts. However, since the torque is directed mainly to the rear axle, the general dynamic behavior is sport-oriented.
